Gary and Mary West are pioneering philanthropists who established the Gary and Mary West Foundation in 2006. To date, the Foundation has issued 400 grants totaling more than $174 million and created nonprofit organizations to provide outcomes-based funding to enable seniors to age on their own terms, preserving and protecting their dignity, quality of life and independence.
In 2009, the Foundation established the Gary and Mary West Health Institute, a 501(c)(3) medical research organization that conducts applied medical research to advance innovative care delivery models that enable successful aging. Additionally, the nonprofit, nonpartisan Gary and Mary West Health Policy Center in Washington, D.C., established in 2012, is focused on senior-centered healthcare delivery and payment policy.
HHS Innovator-in-Residence Program
In June of 2012, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) launched a groundbreaking “Innovator-in-Residence” (IIR) program run out of the HHS IDEA Lab, with the West Health Institute (WHI) to lower the cost and improve the quality of healthcare. Based on the success and early learnings from the IIR program, WHI is now interested in focusing this partnership on health policy innovation to lower the cost and improve the quality of healthcare for seniors. Given the emphasis on seniors, the IIR program will act in partnership between HHS, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and West Health to support research and evaluation of ongoing innovations, along with engagement of a broad range of stakeholders, to advance best practices to address healthcare delivery and payment for seniors.LEARN MORE ABOUT INNOVATOR-IN-RESIDENCE PROGRAM
