IDEA Series: Medical Interoperability to Improve Safety and Lower Costs in Health Care

November 5, 2013

Hospital leadership discussed medical interoperability at our November West Health IDEA series event: Get Connected: Medical Interoperability to Improve Safety and Lower Costs in Health Care. The event brought together two of the brightest minds in health care – Dr. Michael Johns, chairman of the newly-formed Center for Medical Interoperability and former chancellor of Emory University; and Dr. Jeffrey Balser, vice chancellor of Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC). West Health Institute demonstrates research advances in medical device interoperability that could lower the cost of health care

March 4, 2013

The West Health Institute demonstrated research for the HIMSS13 Annual Conference that enables seamless, standards-based communication between medical devices and information systems, and was featured at the HIMSS13 Interoperability Showcase™.

This demonstration of software-based interoperability is part of a collaborative research effort with Wind River, a world leader in embedded and mobile software, and the U.S. Commerce Department’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to achieve interoperability starting at the patient’s point-of-care medical device’s interfaces all the way through to their electronic health record (EHR). The approach is expected to simplify health information technology (HIT) requirements and improve the delivery of care through a patient-centered network of connected and coordinated devices. Dr. Joe Smith gives keynote address at BIOCOM DeviceFest 2012

Dr. Joe Smith, chief science and medical officer of West Health, delivered the keynote address at BIOCOM’s DeviceFest 2012 in Orange County on Aug. 22. Addressing a crowd of life science executives and members of the research community, Dr. Smith gave an overview of West Health’s efforts to address the cost crisis in health care and an overview of how technology can lower costs by helping to bring patients the right care at the right place at the right time.

“We have a remarkable cellular infrastructure that is totally underused for healthcare … We have really good systems to wirelessly monitor roads, bridges and cars. We need remote monitors for people too,” said Dr. Smith. “It’s now a viable business model to work to lower the cost of health care.”
