A seniors-only vaccination site for COVID-19 opens Thursday in San Marcos.

The Gary and Mary West PACE location will administer Moderna vaccines specifically to seniors 65 and older who have made appointments.

The vaccination site will be the first of its kind designed just for seniors in San Diego County.

Within the senior community, the clinic is focusing on the most vulnerable and frail who do not have the support of family members or caregivers.

West Pace CEO Tim Lash said they studied other vaccination sites across the county, like UC San Diego’s Petco Park site, to streamline the process for seniors.

“What you see at this site is very limited movement for the seniors,” Lash said. “We’ll have pre-populated the registration forms for the seniors. They’ll then be escorted by a team to our vaccination cells. And once they’re in these seats, and we have seats to accommodate for caregivers as well, they don’t need to move. So, everything else will come to them.”

Organizers anticipate that the site will quickly begin vaccinating 500 or more seniors per day.

The site in San Marcos will be open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m and appointments can be made by calling 2-1-1 for those 65 and older.
